Captain Casual

1988–

Using contemporary art styles like pop and graffiti, Captain Casual taps into traditional themes of love, flowers, animals, and geometric shapes to create innovative art that puts a premium on bold, bright colors.

Personal History

The story of artist Captain Casual begins at the end. In 2015, the man who now pours immense amounts of happiness onto the canvas of the world actually left this mortal coil after copious amounts of stress and an unhealthy lifestyle quite literally took the life from him. Thankfully, in the back of an ambulance, emergency medical professionals brought him back to life. The artist we now know as Captain Casual, thanks to a combination of a youth spent sailing to dozens of countries and an easy-going nickname, once had an anxiety-filled career in the financial markets but with a new lease on life, he decided to trade not in stocks and bonds, but in color, smiles, and joy. He came to art in an unorthodox way, but his understanding of color and the power of emotional storytelling through art is motivating people to be happier and kinder to one another. And this continues to be one of Captain Casual’s top priorities.

By fusing the pre-existing styles of pop and graffiti art, Captain Casual boldly put a modern and thoroughly unique spin on traditional themes of love, animals, shapes, and beauty in all its forms from the natural world to the Anthropocene. He creates wholly new art that puts a premium on bright colors and stylistic innovation. Captain Casual paints buildings and creates happiness by making stunning works of art on a variety of surfaces, from sheets of currency to pieces of metal, and so much more. Collectors everywhere can’t help but smile when standing before art by Captain Casual.

Not satisfied with just paints and canvases, no artistic medium and method of creation is off-limits for Captain Casual. He uses reclaimed ripped posters from the street and cherries may be smashed onto his palette to make a sumptuous red, spray paint, glue sticks, wood, acrylic, and luxurious paper are all in play for an artist who has a singular goal: to make people smile. He brings joy into hearts every day with a playful, universal style that has no equal in the modern art world.

While Captain Casual left the business world behind, some of the biggest brands have been eager to bring him back into the fold because of his inspirational and vibrant artwork. In the past decade, the artist has created a fresh color palette for Louis Vuitton, hand-painted football cleats for Nike, worked for Urban Decay as a graffiti advisor, and partnered with Under Armour and NBA superstar Steph Curry. From masterpieces for corporate clients to joyful works hanging in homes around the world, everyone wants more color and happiness in their lives. This is why Captain Casual is one of the most vital artists working today.
