Contemporary artist Anna August was already a TikTok sensation before becoming a beloved addition to the art world. Next spring, just like the generations of immigrants who have and continue to add bold color and immense depth to the ongoing painting of the American canvas, the painter who hails from Jamaica will add warmth and vibrancy to the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. That’s right, Park West’s Anna August has been selected as the official artist of the festival that each year decorates our nation’s capital in a delightful panoply of pink.

This is a dream come true for August, who is excited for her artwork which fuses the natural beauty of the cherry trees with recognizable monuments, to bring even more joy, serenity, and even perhaps a bit of nostalgia to the festival. She hopes to “remind viewers of the magic that the blossoms bring each year and give a sense of connection to the festival,” adding that what she looks forward to the most is seeing “how people connect with my artwork in person and feeling the shared joy of the festival.” As the official artist of The National Cherry Blossom Festival, Anna August’s art will also be featured on official festival merchandise. She admits to being super excited about that experience and honor, adding that she “always wanted to go to the parade, so finally experiencing it will be amazing!”

What the 1.5 million visitors to the festival in the spring of 2025 can expect to see is artwork that Anna August describes as “expressionism that’s focused on evoking emotion through vibrant colors and an emphasis on movement.” She believes her style works well in depicting the cherry blossoms because “It captures the fleeting beauty and energy of springtime in the District when the blossoms are full of life and motion.” Her expressionistic painting conveys the delicate yet lively spirit of the trees and the beautiful renewal that they symbolize.
