Happy Birthday to the Norwegian Getaway!
Time sure flew by – or should we say sailed – for the Norwegian Getaway.
The 146,600-ton ship celebrated its birthday on Jan. 10, turning a year old. The ship was delivered on Jan. 10, 2014.
Norwegian Getaway is instantly recognizable thanks to its hull, which is decorated with the colorful, cartoon-like imagery of Park West artist David “Lebo” Le Batard. The main feature of the work is a mermaid lifting the sun over the waves. As the ship sails, it seems as if the mythical creature is skimming the sea.
The Miami-based Lebo was chosen for the project due to his ties to the ship’s port of Miami as well as his bright art style, which was heavily influenced by Cuban art. According to his website, Lebo says he has the pleasure of viewing the ship from his balcony.
Norwegian Getaway is a 4,000-passenger ship that was built in 12 months time, measuring in at 1,062 feet long and 130 feet wide. The ship was named “Best New Ship” for Bon Voyage Magazine’s 2014 Editor’s Choice.
